The Supreme Court has lifted the ban on the film The Kerala Story. Now this film will be released in West Bengal. Today the Supreme Court heard the ban on the Kerala story in Bengal. Chief Justice DY Chandrachud told the Bengal government that power should be exercised with restraint. A film can be banned in a particular district but not in the entire state! Controlling the emotions of the people is the prerogative of the government, the film cannot be banned.
Chief Justice DY Chandrachud said that the exercise of state power should be proportionate. Intolerance of any kind cannot be tolerated but the fundamental right to freedom of expression cannot be determined on the basis of public display of one’s feelings. Public display of emotions should be moderated if you don’t like it don’t watch it.
A hearing was held today in the Supreme Court regarding the banning of the film The Kerala Story in West Bengal. Senior advocate Harish Salve said that the teaser of the film targeting 32,000 girls has been removed. The Kerala High Court also refused to ban the film. That High Court has also written this in the order.
A bench headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud also directed the Tamil Nadu government to make all security arrangements to ensure the screening of the film and the safety of the film goers.
The Supreme Court asked the makers of the film to add an additional disclaimer in the film that there is no authentic data that the number of converts is 32,000 or any other figure. This disclaimer must be added by May 20 at 5 p.m. Now the next hearing in the Supreme Court regarding this film will be held on July 18.
