Qualcomm ties up with OEMs to reduce costs

[ad_1]

Global fabless chip maker Klarcom Inc is currently working with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to bring down the cost of 5G smartphones. The company is trying to bring a phone with a fair amount of additional features at a price of around $90 (Rs 7,000-8,000). High volumes to attract the mass market, say mobile device makers.

According to Rajan Bajaria, President, Qualcomm India and SAARC, mid and entry-level phones are the main volume drivers in India. Customers targeting this segment are looking forward to getting affordable 5G smartphones. Our road map will enable us to design products in these areas and we expect 5G handsets to be priced between Rs. There are also 10,000 and below price points, he added. This is happening at a time when the country is witnessing a huge decline in overall smartphone sales. In the March quarter, a year-on-year decline in smartphone sales in the country was recorded by 19 per cent.
