Now there will be no illiterates in Chamoli district

Gopeshwar: Chamoli district will soon be included in the category of 100 percent literate district. Here everyone is becoming literate by learning to read and count. To achieve the target of 100 per cent literacy, illiterate people in every village and town are being made literate by Jnanamitras under the ‘Samarth Gaon Yojana’ run by the district administration.

District Magistrate Himanshu Khurana instructed to strengthen this campaign in the district level review meeting of ‘Samarth Gaon Yojana’ on Tuesday. He said that this is a participatory and voluntary scheme. For 100 percent literacy in the district, this scheme should be made a public movement and everyone’s cooperation should be taken. He said that illiterate people should be encouraged to become literate. Literacy tasks should be assessed at regular intervals. For those who have become literate, their verification should be done by a third party. The District Magistrate said that glasses will be made available to such old people after getting their eyes checked. In the meantime, he made a detailed review of the literacy program organized in the villages and also took suggestions from everyone.

Chief Development Officer Dr. Lalit Narayan Mishra said that Anganwadi workers, helpers, teachers, students, people associated with voluntary organizations and well-wishers working as Gnanamitra should cooperate with full dedication and efforts to make this scheme a success.

Chief Education Officer Kuldeep Gairola said that a target has been set to make district Chamoli 100 percent literate by April 2024 under the ‘Samarth Gaon Yojana’ run by the district administration. The total literacy rate of the district is 82.65 percent, with male literacy at 94.18 percent and female literacy at 73.20 percent. A total of 21549 illiterate people including 1573 males and 19976 females have been identified in the district who are being made literate by 5249 Gnanamitras. Under Samarth Gaon Yojana, booklets and stationery have also been made available along with training workshops at district, block and cluster levels.

Educated persons, Anganwadi workers, teachers, students, youth clubs, self-help groups are working as Gyan Mitra in the village and teach the illiterate individually three days a week in the evening based on mutual consent by fixing the time.

Chief Development Officer Dr. Lalit Narayan Mishra, Chief Education Officer Kuldeep Gerola, CDPO Sandeep Kumar, Meenakshi of Aziz Premji Foundation etc. were present in the review meeting.
