Varanasi: A joint team of the Varanasi Development Authority (VDA) and the police arrived in Rohnia Mohansarai on Tuesday to demarcate land for the Transport Nagar and protested violently by pelting stones. Several policemen, including an SI, were also injured in the stone pelting.
As soon as the information was received, the force reached there and chased the stone pelting villagers using force. Some agitating women were also injured during this stampede. After this, in the presence of the force and officials, the Varanasi Development Authority team started demarcating the land.
It may be noted that about 20 years ago, 89 hectares of land was to be acquired for the Transport Nagar scheme in Rohnia and four villages of Mohansarai, Bairwan, Karnaddi, Milkichak and Mohansarai. Even after the compensation of approximately 45 hectares of land has been distributed among the affected farmers, the affected farmers have been agitating against it for a long time. The plan could not be implemented due to fierce opposition from the villagers. The VDA administration could not take possession of his land even after paying compensation. When this matter came to the attention of the state government, the VDA administration started the process to re-shape the scheme.
Seeing the proactiveness of the Varanasi Development Authority and the district administration, the farmers of the four villages affected by the scheme decided to hold a Kisan Mahapanchayat on Tuesday. On the other hand, the VDA team along with the police force reached Karnaddi village in the afternoon to demarcate the land of the farmers demanding compensation. As soon as the team started the work of excavation and demarcation with JCB, the villagers who had gathered in the Kisan Mahapanchayat also reached there and started a fierce protest.
The villagers stood in front of the JCB and started shouting slogans. Police officers were pacifying the villagers. Meanwhile, angry farmers pelted stones on the VDA team. As soon as the information was received, the force of several police stations reached Karnaddi village at a fast pace. Force was used to drive away the villagers from there. On getting information about tension and commotion at the scene, officials also reached with additional force.
