Within minutes of the storm, life was disrupted in the coastal areas of West Bengal, many trees fell, many injured.

Kolkata, May 15 (Hindustan Times). Under the influence of cyclonic storm Mocha in the Bay of Bengal, West Bengal capital Kolkata, including the state’s East and West Medinipur, North and South 24 Parganas and the coastal districts of Howrah and Hooghly, received heavy rains with heavy thunderstorms on Monday night. The wind speed was so strong that many trees fell in all these districts including the capital Kolkata. Many people have been injured as trees fell on vehicles at many places. Six people were reported injured in the capital Kolkata alone, while several people were injured in other districts due to falling trees.

A tree fell on a vehicle in front of Kolkata’s Victoria, completely twisting the vehicle. One person on board has been injured. A bike has also come in its grasp. Similarly, many trees have fallen in the lake garden. Four people were injured due to a falling tree in Lake Garden, while one more person was injured in Maidan area. Burdwan district also received rain accompanied by heavy thunderstorms, disrupting the public relations visit of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee. The Meteorological Department has said that winds of up to 84 km per hour have gusted in Kolkata and other districts, causing trees to fall. The damage is currently being assessed.

It is to be noted that Cyclone Mocha has made landfall on the coast of Sittwe, Myanmar and Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. Both these countries have suffered heavy damage, while under its influence West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha received heavy rains with thunderstorms.
