Washington: The ruling Democratic Party in the US has introduced a bill on citizenship called the ‘American Citizenship Act’, which proposes to end the quota of countries for green cards and change the H-1B visa system. If the bill becomes law, it would be easier for immigrants to become US citizens. Democrat Rep. Linda Sanchez introduced the bill on Thursday. The bill also proposes changes to the employment-based immigration system by eliminating quotas for each country.

Democrat MP Sanchez says that the US Citizenship Act 2023 has been prepared to give citizenship to all 11 million illegal immigrants, dreamers, TPS holders living in America. The bill opens a five-year path to citizenship for people without fear of deportation. The bill makes it easier for a foreign national who has been living in the US illegally for years to obtain citizenship.

If this bill introduced in the US Parliament becomes a law, it will greatly benefit Indians. Because a large number of Indians live in America. According to the report of the Ministry of External Affairs, about 45 lakh Indians live in America. However, the proportion of Indians living illegally is also very high. Apart from this, every year thousands of Indians go to America for employment on H-1B visa. In addition, students also attend US universities on student visas.

According to the bill, an illegal immigrant can apply for a green card if he or she has lived and paid taxes in the US for at least five years. Also, a person can apply for a Green Card immediately if he is engaged in work related to agriculture and has lived there for at least five years. The wife and children of the applicant can also get a green card.

The bill also provides that illegal immigrants who live in the US and work for low wages can also get green cards. Also, dependents of H-1B visa holders will be allowed to work in the country and their children will be helped to avoid falling out of the system. The proposed bill also proposes reforms to the immigration system so that families can be reunited. Long pending visa applications of families of green card holders can be cleared immediately. For that, it has also been proposed to increase the quota of each country.

The bill also ends discrimination against LGBTQ people. In the case of same-sex couples, if one partner is a US citizen, his partner may also live with him. In addition, the bill provides automatic citizenship to at least one child if one of the parents is a US citizen. This rule will also apply to same-sex couples.

Green Card and the H-1B Visa Gap

Green cards and H-1B visas are very popular among Indians for obtaining US citizenship and employment.

Green card is a type of permanent residence card. A green card is a document issued to immigrants to the United States as proof that the person is allowed to live in the country. Meanwhile, the H-1B visa is a non-immigrant visa. This visa allows US companies to hire foreign workers.

The H-1B visa is granted to a foreign national working in the United States. Typically, IT companies in the US use H-1B visas to hire software engineers, which are most popular in China and India.
