Indian-origin Vivek Ramaswamy is also presenting his candidacy in the next year’s presidential election in America. Now Ramaswamy has announced that the Civic Duty to Vote Act will be amended if he comes to power. Under this amendment, the voting age will be increased from 18 years to 25 years. Also, if someone wants to vote at the age of 18, then he has to serve in the army for 6 months.
Under the amendment, in order to vote at age 18, US citizens must have served in the US military for at least 6 months or in a first response service (police, firefighters, etc.) for 6 years. If a person does not want to meet these requirements, he or she must take a civics education test similar to the test for U.S. citizenship. If a person does not fulfill any of these conditions then he/she has to wait for 25 years to vote again.
In the US, two-thirds support is required in both houses of Parliament to amend a law. Also, it is necessary to have three-fourth support in the state assembly. Vivek Ramaswamy argues in favor of this amendment that at present 25 percent posts in our army are vacant. Only 16 percent of the younger generation here are proud to be American. Ramaswamy said that the lack of sense of national pride in our generation is a matter of serious concern.
According to Ramaswamy, the civic duty of voting would inculcate a sense of responsibility among the youth and they would be able to become more educated citizens. In the year 1971, under the constitution, the age of voting in America was reduced to 18 years, which is now being increased again to 25 years.
