Hailakandi (Assam): 233 bags of illegally imported Burmese (Myanmar) betel nuts have been seized during the operation conducted in various areas of Hailakandi district.
Police sources said today (Wednesday) that the seized betel nut would have a market value of around Rs 60 lakh. Hailakandi Superintendent of Police Nabanneet Mahant said the police have registered two separate cases at Lala police station in connection with the incident.
Sources said the police seized a total of 40 bags of Burmese betel nuts from two Maruti Alto cars, a Swift and a Santro car during a naka checking at Kalacheda police station in the district last night.
In another operation, the Lala police seized 67 bags of Burmese betel nuts being carried by boats in the local Uptila area. Based on the facts found in this incident, the police succeeded in seizing 126 bags of Burmese betel nuts from another place. Thus, the police in Hailakandi district have succeeded in seizing a total of 233 sacks of illegally imported Burmese betel nuts.
