20 students killed in Guyana school hostel fire

Georgetown: A painful news has emerged from the South American country of Guyana. A fire broke out in a school hostel here, killing 20 students and injuring several others, officials said in a statement.

Guyana’s government said in a statement that the fire broke out in the dormitory building of a secondary school in the town of Mahdia, 320 km south of the country’s capital Georgetown. The government has further said that we have lost many beautiful children in this incident of fire. Several other children are undergoing treatment in various hospitals. Seven seriously injured children have been taken to a hospital in the country’s capital, Georgetown.

National Security Adviser Gerald Gouveia said in a statement that the fire broke out at midnight in the hostel building. The age of the children living in this hostel was between 12 to 18 years. He said that it is too early to tell the cause of the fire. Opposition MPs have demanded a thorough probe into the incident. According to sources, the students were sleeping when the fire broke out. Due to bad weather, the fire brigade had to face a lot of difficulties in controlling the fire.
