There is good news for millions of car owners in the country. The government is preparing to change the scrapping policy. If this happens, there will be no need to send vehicles to scrap after 15 years. Let us tell you that the government is working on a policy to convert vehicles into scrap based on the pollution they cause instead of their ‘age’. A senior official gave this information on Tuesday. Right now vehicles are being removed from the road based on age. There is a lot of opposition to this. Given this, there is now a plan to change the policy.

Will be scrapped based on pollution

Addressing the annual conference of automobile manufacturers’ body SIAM here, Road Transport and Highways Secretary Anurag Jain asked the auto industry to help the government in making the pollution testing program “reliable”. “When you come up with a policy making it compulsory to scrap 15-year-old vehicles, people have a question that if they have maintained their vehicles well, why should their vehicles be scrapped? You cannot make it compulsory,” Jain said. He said the government was studying it only from the pollution angle to consider such situations.

Pollution testing must be made reliable.

He said, “The government is working on a policy for this. Can we refer to pre-BS-2? We are not talking about age. Can we set a limit for vehicle pollution?” However, he asked the industry to ensure that pollution testing is reliable even in this situation. The Road Transport and Highways Secretary said, “I would request all of you to help us in scheduling pollution testing. We know how to get the certificate now. In such a situation, the pollution certificate should be reliable.” He also praised the automobile industry for giving up to a three percent discount on the purchase of new vehicles in exchange for old vehicles declared scrap.
