Britney Spears case: Wednesday marked a significant day for singer Britney Spears as a Los Angeles judge has said that she can now choose her own lawyer in the fight to end her conservatorship. Spears is locked in a fierce legal tussle to terminate her father’s guardianship that has allowed him to control her business and personal affairs for the past 13 years. She had earlier alleged that she felt forced to perform, take medication and attend therapy against her will. The judge’s rule came after the pop superstar deemed her father’s controversial arrangement as â????cruelty.â????
This conservatorship, which was allotted to Britney’s father in 2008, gives Jamie Spears control of her business and personal affairs. He is currently in charge of her $60m estate.
Three weeks after her explosive testimony, a judge on Wednesday accepted the resignation of Spears’ previous attorney. The court also signaled that the 39-year-old can now hire Mathew Rosengart to represent her. “You’re allowing my dad to ruin my life. I have to get rid of my dad and charge him with conservatorship abuse,” Spears noted before the judge’s ruling. She also stressed on the subject of her mental health that had prompted her father to petition the court for legal authority over his daughter’s life.
Last month a judge denied the star’s request to remove her father from his role overseeing her affairs. After this ruling, her new lawyer, Rosengart told AFP that he is filing a petition “as soon as possible” to terminate Jamie Spears as the conservator. He also suggested the singer’s father should step down now before this case progresses any further. Rosengart is a former federal prosecutor who has represented the likes of Steven Spielberg and Sean Penn.
The singer, during the hearing, said she has “extreme abandonment issues” because of her father. Last month, she alleged the legal arrangement was “abusive” in a 20-minute public address that grabbed interest of her fans and supporters in the conservatorship case, which her father initiated after his daughter had a mental health breakdown. Following the new ruling, Spears posted a video of herself performing cartwheels on social media. “Coming along, folks… coming along!!!!! New with real representation today… I feel GRATITUDE and BLESSED,” she tweeted and signed her post with the phrase adopted by her loyal fans: “#FreeBritney.”
