New Delhi: Modi government (Modi Sarkar) has taken a big and important decision regarding the matter related to girls becoming mothers and their marriage. The government has actually set up a task force led by Jaya Jaitley, which will review how much marriage and motherhood are related to the health and nutrition of women and their children. The task force will also review the marriage age of the girls. The task force has also been asked to suggest further promotion of higher education in girls. The task force will submit its report on 31 July. There is a decision of the Supreme Court behind this exercise of the government.
Apart from Jaya Jaitley, the task force will include Dr. VK Paul, Member (Health) NITI Aayog, Secretary of Higher Education, School Education, Health, Women and Child Development, Legislative Department besides academicians Najma Akhtar, Vasudha Kamat, and Deepti Shah.
In this budget speech, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had said that a task force would be formed to advise the woman about the right age to become a mother. The minimum age for marriage of the girl is fixed at 18 years and for the boy 21 years.
In October 2017, the Supreme Court said in a ruling that child marriage should be considered completely illegal to protect the girl from marital rape. The decision of the minimum age for marriage was left to the government by the Supreme Court. It is also being said that by fixing the legal age of becoming a mother at 21 years, the number of years of a woman’s ability to have children will decrease by herself.
