Jharkhand can definitely win 1 seat, but the Congress will have a tough time

Post

Suspense Crime, Digital Desk : There will be 24 Rajya Sabha elections on the 18 th June. Jharkhand would also be fighting two Rajya Sabha seats. After former chief minister Shibu Soren passed away and Deepak Prakash completed his tenure, two Rajya Sabha seats became vacant in Jharkhand. The elections are scheduled to take place for these two seats. Both the seats are expected to go to the All India Alliance. The JMM would definitely win 1 seat, but there is a question if Congress would be able to win a single Rajya Sabha seat at all.

Let’s have a look at the equation:

In Jharkhand, there are a total of 81 MLAs. The highest numbers of MLAs in Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) are 34. One Rajya Sabha seat can be won in Jharkhand with a total of 28 votes. Hence the JMM can certainly win 1 seat in Jharkhand. The Congress doesn't have the required numbers for even a single Rajya Sabha seat in Jharkhand. The Congress needs to win a seat and hence it has to get the support from 6 more JMM MLas as well as from RJD and CPI (ML) MLAs. Total number of RJD MLAs are 4,CPI (ML) are 2 and Congress needs the votes from all these 4+2+6=12 MLas to win a single Rajya Sabha seat. If these MLAs all vote for Congress then it will win a seat in Rajya Sabha.

The BJP is also staking a claim of 1 seat

While JMM is staking claim of 1 seat in Jharkhand, BJP is also not behind. The saffron party along with Congress is staking claim of a Rajya Sabha seat in Jharkhand. The BJP would win this seat as it is having a total number of 24 MLas. (21+1+1+1 MLA for JDU, AJSU and LJP). So the BJP needs only 4 more MLAs to win a Rajya Sabha seat. The BJP would have no issue if any opposition MLA cross votes in the Rajya Sabha elections, and in that scenario BJP candidate would definitely win 1 seat in Jharkhand. But it is very unlikely.
