IPL 2022: Lucknow’s captain Rahul blames the batsmen, told the experience of learning defeat from Gujarat
Pune : Lucknow Super Giants captain KL Rahul on Tuesday said the humiliating 62-run defeat at the hands of Gujarat Titans in which his team was all out for 82 was a good learning experience for their batsmen whose poor shot-selection Means the team has fallen. Big defeat in a low scoring match
Rahul had termed the pitch difficult at the toss itself and was unsure how it would play out. And his team proved how tough life was by scoring 82 runs on that pitch at the MCA Stadium.
The pitch was difficult as the ball was hitting the surface and slowing down but there were no monsters in it. The batsmen who played carefully and stayed on the wicket were rewarded. Gujarat Titans opener Shubman Gill proved with his unbeaten 63 that helped his team reach 144/4 in 20 overs.
In reply, leg-spinner Rashid Khan led a clinical bowling performance to claim 4/24 as Gujarat Titans registered a 62-run win.
Rahul blamed his batsmen for the loss and said that they were to blame for poor shot selection. He said that it is a learning experience for his team.
“We should have batted a lot better. Some poor shot selection and a runout didn’t help. Hopefully some good lessons for us from this. For this a defeat is not what a team wants but sometimes you need a little reminder to keep turning. In every game and keep doing your best,” he said in a post-match presentation on Tuesday.
Rahul said the trick here was for him and fellow opener Quinton de Kock to get the team on board with 30-40 runs in the powerplay overs.
“With these low totals, you want to use Powerplay. So for me and Quinton, it was about giving the team a good start, not necessarily for the 60-run powerplay, but at least reaching 35. Or 45 would have been ideal and set us up without losing too many wickets. Because we knew the pitch was going to be a bit grippy and it could be difficult to score runs and hit boundaries after the powerplay so we took some chances that didn’t come off,” he said.
Rahul, who has praised his bowlers for their excellent performance in restricting Gujarat to below 150, said he knew it would be difficult to bat against the spinners in the second innings.
“In between, we knew their spinners would be difficult to score but having said that we would have to find ways to score runs against good opposition on difficult pitches. This is something we need to learn and understand,” he said. ,
He said the task now for his team was to regroup quickly and come back with good energy and intensity for the remaining games in IPL 2022.
“Obviously we are not going to sit back and analyze a game like this. What we want is the energy and the intensity in the field and that was quite good when we were fielding. While batting, you get a chance and you can make a mistake. So you don’t want to over-analyze a game like this. You want to learn from it and see how we can do better if we are put in such a situation again.”
Lucknow are currently on the second position in the points table with 16 points from 12 matches. Wins in their next two matches will ensure their place in the playoffs.
