A court in Chhattisgarh’s Durg district has sentenced a 47-year-old man to death for shooting dead his parents in 2018. While giving the verdict in this case, the court has described it as a terrible and rare incident. In the 310-page judgment on Monday, Additional Sessions Judge Shailesh Kumar Tiwari quoted several verses from the Mahabharata to say that capital punishment would be an appropriate punishment for the convicts, so that no one dares to commit the heinous crime of killing parents again.

In this case, public prosecutor Suresh Prasad Sharma said on Tuesday that the main accused Sandeep Jain has been sentenced to death. On the other hand, two other accused who supplied arms to him have been sentenced to five years rigorous imprisonment.

On January 1, 2018, accused Sandeep Jain shot dead his 72-year-old father Rawalmal Jain and 67-year-old mother Surji Devi in Durg. The father of the killer Sandeep was a prominent businessman and social worker. Only 3 people lived in the house. After Sandeep’s parents were shot dead under suspicious circumstances, the police arrested Sandeep on the basis of circumstantial evidence. Because at the time of the incident, apart from both the deceased, he was the only one present in the house.

In this case which lasted for 5 years, it was finally proved in the court that there were differences between the accused Sandeep and his father on many issues including property and due to this the accused shot dead both mother and father to grab the property. The public prosecutor said that Sandeep killed his parents because he was afraid of being evicted from the property.

The court, after hearing arguments and verifying the evidence, convicted Sandeep under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code. Bhagat Singh Gurudutt and Shailendra Sagar, who gave the pistol to Sandeep, have been sentenced to five years’ rigorous imprisonment each and fined one thousand rupees each.
