Cyclone Asani in the Bay of Bengal is moving northwestwards along the coasts of Andhra Pradesh and Orissa. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), severe cyclonic storm ‘Aasani’ will reach Kakinada and Visakhapatnam coasts by Wednesday and move along Andhra Pradesh coast. After this, it is likely to weaken gradually into a cyclonic storm. With a speed of 10 kmph, the storm is expected to move northwestwards by tonight and reach north Andhra coast and adjoining Odisha coast.

National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams are on alert mode to deal with the cyclone smoothly. A total of 50 NDRF teams have been deployed for West Bengal, Orissa and Andhra Pradesh. According to NDRF officials, 22 teams have already been deployed, while 28 teams have been put on alert within the states to deal with the situation as the oncoming storm hits the north Andhra Pradesh coast. Out of 22 teams deployed, 12 teams have been deployed in coastal districts of West Bengal, nine teams in coastal Andhra Pradesh and one team in Balasore district of Odisha.

 

In view of the storm, NDRF personnel are running awareness campaigns in the coastal areas about the dos and don’ts during the cyclone and making a special appeal to the people living in the coastal areas to reach safe places/shelters. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea for the next 48 hours. Also, the IMD is using the Internet media to inform the public about the latest storm conditions.

It is noteworthy that according to the latest forecast of the Meteorological Department, there is a possibility of heavy rain at different places in North Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Coastal Odisha on Wednesday. A rain alert has also been issued in various parts of Coastal West Bengal. On Thursday, May 12, there is a possibility of light to moderate rain at some places and heavy at many places over the coastal areas of Odisha and West Bengal.
