Chennai: Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai on Friday said late Kannada film star Puneeth Rajkumar, who passed away last year, will be posthumously conferred with the ‘Karnataka Ratna’ award.

He will be the 10th recipient of the state’s highest civilian honour.
“We have resolved to give Karnataka Ratna award to Puneeth Rajkumar on November 1, we will form a committee of members of the Rajkumar family to prepare for it,” he said. The award will be conferred with full honours,” Bommai said.
He was addressing after inaugurating the annual Independence Day Flower Show at the Glass House in Lalbaug in Chennai.
Kannada actor and doctor Dr Rajkumar, and his son, actor Puneeth Rajkumar were honored in a unique wreath at this year’s flower show.
Puneeth, the youngest of Dr Rajkumar’s five children and widely regarded as the current leading star of Kannada film, died on October 29 at the age of 46 following a cardiac arrest.
At the “Punitha Namana” organized by the Karnataka Cinema Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) in association with Sandalwood film actors and technicians’ groups to honor Puneeth Rajkumar, the Chief Minister had announced that the late actor would receive the award.
Dr Virendra Hegde was last awarded the Karnataka Ratna for social service in 2009.
It is interesting to note that Rajkumar, the late father of poet Kuvempu and Puneeth, was one of the first to receive the Karnataka Ratna award in 1992. S Nijalingappa (Politics), CNR Rao (Science), Dr. Devi Prasad Shetty (Medicine), Bhimsen Joshi (Music), Shivakumara Swamiji (Social Service), and Dr. J. Javre Gowda are the other recipients of the Award (Education and Literature).
