Mythological story related to Tulsi Puja

According to popular mythology, Jalandhar was born out of the anger of Lord Shiva. Jalandhar later became the ruler of the demons and then he came to be known as Daityarad Jalandhar. Jalandhar was married to Vrinda, who was a devoted wife. Vrinda was an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu. Due to her powers of devotion to her husband, Jalandhar became more powerful day by day. Due to Vrinda’s devotion to her husband, even the gods could not defeat Jalandhar in the war.

Due to this, Jalandhar became very proud of his power and then he started harassing the wives of the gods. Shiva became angry at this, due to which a war also took place between Mahadev and Jalandhar. But, due to Jalandhar’s power, every attack of Mahadev kept failing. Then Lord Vishnu took the form of Jalandhar and reached Vrinda. Seeing Vishnu Ji in the form of Jalandhar, Vrinda started treating him like her husband, and then Vrinda’s chastity was broken. In this way, Jalandhar was killed by Mahadev. After this, Vrinda cursed Vishnu Ji and turned him into stone. But then after the request of Lakshmi Mata, she turned him back to health and became Sati. Tulsi plant was born from his ashes and the tradition of marriage of Shaligram with him started.
